Paralympic Athletics

The largest sport on the London 2012 Paralympics programme, Paralympic Athletics will showcase 1100 Athletes from around the world battling to win in 170 medal events. At the London 2012 Paralympic Games the impressive Olympic Stadium will be home to the Paralympic Athletic track and field events, whilst The Mall in central London will hold the Paralympic Marathon events.

Paralympic Athletics consists of track events like the 100m to 5000m races and various field events like the Shot Put and High Jump. Paralympic Athletes are put in different classifications to compete within their sport fairly with Athletes of similar disabilities or range of movement. Each Paralympic Athlete is given a two-digit number, the first to specify the nature of impairment and the second to indicate the range of motion the Paralympic Athlete has. The greater the number the less of an impact the Paralympic Athlete’s disability has on his or her ability to compete.
