Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby
Wheelchair Rugby or “Murderball” as it is often known is a tough sport that will take place in the Basketball Arena during the London 2012 Paralympic Games. A hugely popular sport with spectators, Wheelchair Rugby began in Canada in 1977, by a group of quadriplegic athletes looking for a sport to play that allowed for reduced arm and hand function as an alternative to Wheelchair Basketball.
The object of a Wheelchair Rugby game is to carry the white ball, similar in size and shape to a Volleyball over the oppositions goal line. The teams are made up of four players and Wheelchair Rugby players are able to make contact with their wheelchairs, but not with their bodies, making this a skilful and competitively exciting sport.
At the London 2012 Games Wheelchair Rugby will host 8 international teams all trying to win the only Paralympic Gold Medal up for grabs in this event. The sport is one of the must see events of the Paralympic Games and with a Thomas Cook Games Break from as little as £89pp you can be there to soak up the atmosphere and the excitement.
